Jericho NY Yellow Pages

Jericho is a hamlet on the North Shore of Long Island in Oyster Bay. In 1648, Jericho was a section of the Robert Williams Plantation. Shortly after this time, Quakers that were being persecuted against in Europe moved to the area. They became farmers and in 1692, changed the name of the hamlet from Luxum to Jericho after the town in the Bible close to the Jordan River known as part of the Promised Land. In 1771, Elias Hicks along with wife Jemima moved to the area, Elisa become a preacher of the Quaker doctrine. In 1788, a Friends Meeting house was constructed which is still in use today. In 1793, a Quaker school was built, post office was established in 1801, a cider mill during the 19th century, and the first public school in 1905.

Today, Jericho is home to three elementary schools including Elementary Jackson Elementary, Cantiague Elementary, one middle school, and one high school. There are many quaint shops and delightful restaurants offering residents and visitors plenty of cuisine to enjoy as well as charming local shop owners selling their wares.
Jericho is home to the Quaker Cemetery which is one of the most popular historic sites to see. Others prefer a visit to the Meadow Brook County Club.
